Square Specifications

For those of you who want to contribute:

The specs:

  • Worsted weight acrylics, washable acrylic blends, or superwash wool (most of my yarn is good ol’ God Bless American thrift stores Red Heart.)
  • 7” squares
  • G-H hook if crochet, 6-8 needle if knit. Don’t make chain mail, but don’t make a tennis net, either. ;)

Sizes:

  • Baby: go easy on these. I know they are quick and fun, but the kids and adults are more in need of adequate-sized blankets. Baby blankets should be 40” x 40”. If you want to do an individual one of these rather than sending squares, let me know.
  • Twin: (66”x90”) Blankets at the shelter need to tuck around the mattress. An afghan of 7” squares would be an 8x13 layout, before joining and border. One afghan would need 104 squares.
  • Full/Queen: (90”x90”) Blankets at the shelter need to tuck around the mattress. An afghan of 7” squares would be a 13x13 layout, before joining and border. One afghan would need 169 squares.
Now, ideally, you’re a Bay Area person who wants to join in, but if you want to mail squares from France or China, I won’t stop you. And thank you. Times are hard, and this area has seen many families out on the street. Contact me directly if you want to mail things my way. sandy4sjsu at gmail dot com

The plan, part 2

The shelter needs blankets for adults and babies. Blankets for twin/full beds should tuck around beds. Here's standard retail size for blankets that fit around mattresses.

Baby: 40 x 40 inches (doesn't need to tuck around anything)
Twin 66 x 90 inches
Full/Queen 90 x 90 inches

I'm aiming for a twin blanket with my first project. I'm using acrylic yarn scraps, a size H hook, and four different patterns. I think I want to make the joining and border color dark green (there's more green than what I put in that bottom team picture, don't worry).  Here's hoping I don't run out!  The layout pattern looks to be like 9 squares across, 13 down, unless joining and blocking changes that a lot.

I also have a little baby blanket I can make, too. It will be predominantly white, with variegated Easter pastels and two shades of light green.
So. This is what I'm doing. Next post, I will give you some hints on what you might do.

The Plan

I'm collecting 7" afghan squares, knitted or crocheted, for making into blankets for Family Supportive Housing.

Quick rules for these squares:
* Use acrylic yarn or machine-washable wool ONLY
* G-H hook if crocheting, 6-8 needle if knitting.  Not too floppy, not too stiff.
* any color, any pattern, as long as it is 7" on each side and equilaterally SQUARE

If you're interested in helping out, comment below.  I'll be posting pics and progress of the squares I'm doing. Please go to the above linked website for more info about the shelter and to check out their wishlist.

Ask any questions you can think of-- I'd love to brainstorm with folks to find out the best way to make the most squares and do the best job we can!
